4,265.4 miles, 28 days, 12 states, 1 woman, 1 car

“It’s not the destination that matters, but the journey that makes it memorable.”

Hello there blog world.
I write this post, from the exact place I started it. My comfy bed of my room, in my simple house in Pearland TX.

I'm not sure how to finish this blog, or even if I should finish the blog. During the last leg of my drive today, lots of things crossed my mind as to how I should finish this adventure.

I suppose I will just write and see where I end up...

What did I learn this trip?
-I love staying in Hotels
-Traveling by yourself doesn't have to be intimidating or scary
-America is a beautiful country
-Arkansas' roads are not very good
-Being away from home for a month wasn't as hard as I thought it would be
-I saw some of the most amazing things\places\people
-I have amazing friends and family all around America
-It is wise to get off the interstate and take the time to travel the road less traveled.

Words can't describe the sense of accomplishment I have, or the amount of independence I feel. I feel like I can handle almost anything now.

So what is my next adventure...where will I go? I'm not sure yet, but I think it is good to take the time I have now to replay the memories and unpack my life that was spent in my car.

Thanks for your support and your love,

My final mileage from my driveway. I'm home.
Much love,
E

KY -TN- TX

Sorry for the delay everyone!

Well, here is a loaded but quick update on my most recent travels!

Rest of Lexington:
I spent the day driving around checking out the Horse Park, Race Track, and Jean Farris Winery. Lovely places and enjoyed seeing the country side!

Sunday morning I headed to Memphis TN and let me must say.. I LOVED IT. I have to go back! I stayed at the Memphis downtown Beale St. What a neat place and would love to go back with friends. Its kind of like a mini-bourbon street with really good music!

This morning I left Memphis by way of Graceland and headed to Texas! A long long long drive but I made it to Ft. Worth area around 6. I am staying with my friend Audrey who went on the cruise with me back in June! So fun to see her place and where she grew up!

We had a lovely dinner, and stopped by a wine bar for a wine tasting and we're back home to watch tv and take it easy.

I will head to Marble Falls tomorrow at some point. Anxious to see my family, but sad my trip is ending. What an amazing experience. I can't wait to give my trip the "report card"!

Hope all is well! Much love,
E

Lexington, Kentucky

Sorry for the delay in my update. Didn't really feel like blogging much yesterday.

Yesterday morning I woke up from Charleston and grabbed breakfast. I headed towards Kentucky around 10:30, drove through some rain storms but it was still a beautiful drive. I arrived in Lexington around 12:30-1:00ish and got checked into my hotel. I dropped off my stuff in my room and went out and looked around town (my hotel is quite far from the city itself). I got back to the hotel around 4 and I hung out here in the room for a bit to decide what I wanted to do next. Who am I kidding, I love hotel bars, so I went the the one here in the hotel and had some chicken wings and a cocktail. When I finished I came back to the room to vedge and clean up a bit. After that I went back to the bar for another couple cocktails and visit with the nice bartender, Bev. She was really excited  to hear about my trip. It was fun telling her about all my adventures!

Up this morning and had breakfast. Back at the room getting myself and my stuff together for the day. Plan on going up to the horse park (north of town) and then hitting up a winery. I'm off to Memphis tomorrow morning (about a 6 hour drive).

Hope all is well!
Much love,
E

Perspective

Good evening everyone.

I write you all from my hotel room in Charleston WV tonight. Crazy I've been so many places. Sad to see my trip winding up, but happy to replay all the fun memories I've made in my head.

Today I woke up and headed out of Fairfax at 9:30 this morning and headed West. I made a scenic detour down the Skyline Parkway in VA and it was stunning! I can't wait to really go through all of my pictures!

Once I got into WV I noticed some dark clouds and just outside of Charleston. The last 12 miles of my trip was rough, driving rain and flashers. But alas I got here about 4:30. Once i got checked in, I headed to dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings (in the rain) and I'm back at the hotel.

During my drive a song came on my radio (iPod) and its one I know fairly well from years back, but I heard it and thought about all I've done and it really gave me perspective on this trip.. I've really done some awesome things and I think this song helps put it into perspective.
Find Yourself- Brad Paisley (from the movie, Cars)

I hope all is well, Much love

My day in DC

This morning I woke up and got myself ready to head to DC. Marcy dropped me off at the Metro on her way to work and I headed into town. I went back to the Madison Building and Jefferson buildings of the Library of Congress. That is where I got my own library card for "research" and got to see the Gershwin piano and exhibit. Jackie really needs to see the Bob Hope exhibit when she comes up here!

A little before noon I met up with my friend Amber from Pearland for lunch at a palce called "Tune Inn" This restaurant is right on Capital Hill and it was featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. We each had a burger and it was delicious!

After lunch I went to the metro and got myself to Union Station. What a bittersweet stop to go there and see again the place of one of my most fondest memories of my PaPa Dale. Back in 2004 he, my mom and myself went to DC for a weekend trip and during that trip we sad at the center cafe for one of my happiest memories ever.

When I came into the main atrium my heart sank and tears welled up in my eyes (no I didn't really cry) but my heart ached for that memory replaying in my head. I pulled up to the side of the cafe where we sat, and ordered a beer. PaPa loved Coors Light, unfortunately they didn't have any, so I just had myself a Stella Artios. It was fun and I enjoyed my quiet time people watching and reminicing to my sweet, sweet memory.

After a little bit of shopping and hanging out I hopped back on the Metro and went and met up with Marcy, Lauren, and Ada. We headed home and had a lovely dinner of Swiss Steaks!
SPOIL ME ROTTEN!

My plan is to head to Charleston WV tomorrow morning around 9, so most of my time tonight will be doing laundry and packing up my stuff.

I've really enjoyed my stay here in Fairfax, such wonderful time with family I don't get to see very often. I'm so glad I came up here.

The view I had so many years ago. :)

A taste of DC

Good evening everyone! I hope this post finds you well and cool! It was a toasty day here in VA\DC but luckily some cool water always fix the heat.

This morning I woke up and hit up a few stores with Lauren and Ada as we tried our best to stay cool! We grabbed lunch at a place called Cafe Rio (started in Utah) it was pretty yummy! I had nachos.

After that we came home and hung out here a bit while Ms. Ada napped. I then went to Wegman's grocery store for a fun outing! It was a cool store and had a really cool wine\beer selection. Of course I had to make some purchases!

I came home and Marcy and I headed to the Metro and downtown DC to check out the Library of Congress. Too bad most of it was closed, but we did get the chance to ask a few questions and I have a better  idea of where I'm going and what I'm doing tomorrow.

We came home for a delicious roast and gravy meal! It was deeeelicious.. we're going to vedge and watch tv some. Hopefully will be early to bed tonight for this tired traveler!

I still need to get my hotels booked for Charleston WV and Lexington KY. Hopefully I can get that booked tonight.

I hope all is well. Much Love,
E

Me in front of the Capital!

In front of the Jefferson Building

They were closed, so I'm going back tomorrow! I LOVE THIS IDEA!

Random thoughts

Here are some of my random thoughts as I hang out at the house here in Fairfax.

-I'm far from home.

-I can't decide if I want to draw out my travels home (as planned) or get back to TX faster.

-It's hot in DC, but nothing like TX

-I wish my cell phone kept charge longer.

-I really love it when Marcy scratches my back or plays with my hair.

-I enjoy being out of my comfort zone once I'm there (ie traveling to places alone)

-I miss my Evie more than anyone could ever imagine, but Ada does help fill that void

-I wonder how things are going to end up once I get back home.

-Still need to find out where I'm staying in Lexington at the end of this week. And how long I'm staying there.

That is all for now. I'll update more later.

2000 miles is far from home!

Hello there readers and friends alike,

Sorry about the no post yesterday, had a late night driving and was pretty sleepy upon arrival to Fairfax VA.

Yesterday we woke up and headed to church with Ms. Ada in her sweet dress. After church, Lauren and I ran a couple errands while Bill took Ada home for a nap.

Once home I played "tetris" with the stuff in my car so we could make room for our special cargo, and about 6:30 we headed North torwards Fairfax. Just one pit stop and we got here around 11:15 last night. Traffic wasn't great, but not horrible either. Crazy people here drive later than they do in TX.

On our trip I noticed that my trip-ometer (whatever its called) broke 2000 miles since I left Pearland. CRAZY!!!

My plan is to hang out here in the DC\VA area until Thursday morning and leave (at some point) and head to Lexington KY. Not sure if I'm going to drive it straight or stop in Charleston WV for a night.. its the difference between 8 hour drive and 5 hour drive... so we'll see.

Hope all is well!

Much love,
E
Thanks Lauren for snapping this picture as we were driving!

13 Days

Hello again family, friends, and folks of the internet world!

Today is day 13 of my travels and I am already feeling the pull into the last part of the trip. So many things to think about! Mostly about work when I get back home. I'll have about 2 weeks left of summer once I'm back in the Houston area, which is nice. But dang Summer always flies by!

This morning we woke up and had breakfast prepared by Bill and we hung out with Ms. Ada. After breakfast, (10 oclock) Ada went down for a nap so Lauren and I headed out on a little adventure around Greenville. It was a lot of fun and I got a few cool things along the way.

We came home and had lunch then went to the Winterville Park so Ms. Ada could swing and spend some good time outside.

After that we came home for Ada's nap and Lauren and Bill are working on dinner while I'm listening to golf and searching things on the internet.

Tomorrow evening Lauren, Ada, and myself will head to the Fairax\DC area. I'm looking forward to spending some more time with my East Coast family.

I'm off to vedge and hang out. Ya'll take care!

Much love,
E

1700+ miles

Good evening people,

Well I write this from another destination on my travels. Winterville NC with my cousin Lauren and her hubs Bill. Ada (their daughter) too!

I got here around 4:30 (eastern) and hung out and watched Ada be adoreable. We had dinner here at the house and when Ada went down for a nap Lauren and I did a mini tour-de- Greenville with a stop to a frozen yogurt restaurant called "BrrrBerry" it was yummy!

Back at the house now and vedging. Will probably be an early night for me. Hanging out tomorrow around town and will be headed to the Virginia area Sunday evening. I am looking forward to spending more time with family\friends up there! After that I'll start working my way back Southwest towards TX with a few stops along the way.

Hope all is well- Much Love,

I enjoyed checking out the stops and got some good gifts purchased for the family. I'm off to the hotel bar here in a bit to have dinner and visit with new people I meet.

Atlanta and the Carolinas

Good evening everyone!

Sorry I didn't post last night, was super tired!

I'll start with yesterday (Atlanta)
-Woke up and enjoyed a lovely breakfast prepared by Ashleigh and got ready for our day. We hit the happy trail and walked to the "MARTA" station that is about a mile away from their place and got ourselves a day pass!
- We took the MARTA to our first stop which led us to the Great World of Coca-Cola. I'm a CC fan so it was right up my alley! Some really cool history and interactive museum! I loved it!
-After GWCC we headed to the Varisty by way of another MARTA station just off of the CNN center, it was interesting seeing seeing a news headquarters even if briefly.
-VARSITY!!! This place has been on my bucketlist since I've seen it on "Hotdog Paradise" on Travel Channel. It was pretty yummy and I enjoyed trying the local cuisine!
-After we ate our late lunch, Ashleigh and I headed back to the MARTA and headed home. Jeff saved us the mile walk to the house (my knee was killing me) by picking us up. Thanks Jeff!

Once back to the house Jeff's friend James showed up and the 4 of us headed to a bar called "Church" HILARIOUS. A little blasphemus but entertaining to say the least.
After a few drinks there, Ash and I went to another bar for Trivia Tuesday while Jeff and James went and hung out with some guys. We did pretty well at Trivia, but no win...no big deal. lol

Ash and I headed home and were asleep by 11. We were pooped!
Woke up this morning and had breakfast with everyone and watched some tv. Around noon Ashleigh and I headed to Northern ATL so I could go check out an Auction House called Gallery 63. Gallery 63 is featured on Discovery Channel for their show called Auction Kings. Its one of my favorite shows and I was giddy like a kid to go there! YES!!!! I MET ALL THE CAST!! So exciting, I didn't know what to do with myself I wanted to jump up and down and scream like a school girl... alas I didn't but it was so neat seeing them in real life!

Such an amazing thing! After we were done snooping around Gallery 63, Ash headed home and I hit the happy trail to NC. I'm here tonight and will hit up some cool NASCAR stuff tomorrow! Looking forward to it!

Hope all is well! Here are my favorite pictures from today!!

Much Love,

Week 2- day 1

Hello from Atlanta!

This morning I left Huntsville around 8 am and headed south-east to Atlanta. I got to my friend Ashleigh and her husband Jeff's house around 2:30 (EST).

I did however made a pitstop to Talladega Super Speedway to check out their museum and hall of fame. It was really neat.

When I got to ATL we hung out at the house, then headed over to a local bar for drinks and darts. It was good fun. We then came back to the house (storming now) and cooked dinner. I had fried green tomatoes for the first time! Yummy yummy!

Watching some TV now, will have a fun day tomorrow I'm sure! Hope all is well!

Much Love,

Day 7- Week 1 - favorites

Good evening everyone out there in cyber world!

Tonight I'm finishing up my stay in Huntsville with Sarah and Calan. I'm sad to be leaving, but also excited for the next stop on my travels. (Atlanta)

Today I slept in a bit, hung out with S & C over some awesome Oregon coffee and watched TV.
I headed out to try to get my oil changed, however the Firestone here in town was booked all day. So I will try to get it done on the way to ATL tomorrow. After I came back I just spent the day watching tv and hanging out at the apartment. We went to dinner over at C's Dad and Step-mom's place. It was fun visiting with them cause I haven't seen them since S & C got married. We're back here at the apartment now and watching tv.

So my favorites of this week-

-Visitng with Family & Friends - I have lots of awesome people in my life
-Fireworks in a rooftop lounge - Meeting new people and seeing something new
-USS Alabama - History Lessons
-Mardi Gras Museum - more history
-Jack Daniels Distillery - Bucket List

I'll head out of Huntsville tomorrow morning about 8:00 and I'll head to ATL to see Ashleigh and Jeff!

Watching TV now and will probably head to bed somewhat early tonight. Hope all is well wherever you are!

Much love,
E

Itenerary Change

Hey friends!

I'm just posting quickly to a change I've made in my itenerary.

Instead of spending Thursday night in Myrtle Beach, SC I will be spending Wednesday and Thursday (11-12)  in Charlotte NC! I think this is a better stop because I can go check out the NASCAR hall of fame and the track there!

Hope all is well,
E

Day 6- Bucket List

Good evening (early morning) everyone! I'm just showered and getting into bed after an amazing day with friends I love so much.

This morning Sarah, Calan, and myself woke up and headed to a breakfast diner here in Huntsville called the Blue Plate Cafe. We had a lovely breakfast that included pancakes, turkey sausage, and my NEW FAVORITE BREAKFAST ITEM... CHEESY HASH BROWNS omg, i didn't even have to use ketchup, and if you know me.... thats a feat within itself!

After breakfast we headed to Tennessee to Lynchburg. Now once again if anyone knows me....I love me some Jack Daniels, so yes. We went to the distillery!! I'm not sure what number it was specifically, but I can now scratch the JD destillery off my bucket list! It was so neat to do the tour (tasting one) and learn about the history of one of my favorite spirits!

We got home around 1:30 and had a sandwhich here at the house, then took a nap. It was awesome. When we woke up we watched some tv, Sarah and I went to the grocery store, and then came home to make my homemade salsa! It was great and Calan grilled some awesome burgers and we ate here while watching NASCAR (lots of wrecks).

After that we went by Sarah and Calan's new house they're having built and it was so neat to walk around the property as it was being built.

Tomorrow's plans are nice and easy, so we stayed up watching tv pretty late tonight. We're all headed to bed now, and will make a plan in the morning! Hope all is well with everyone!

Much Love,
E

Day 5- Huntsville Alabama

Hey everyone!

I write this from a very happy place in my heart. Tonight and the rest of this weekend I will be spending time with one of my best-est friends from college, Sarah and her husband Calan. Such wonderful friends its like we pick up where we left off every time!

This morning I woke up from my hotel in Mobile, packed up my stuff and checked out and crossed the street to the Mobile Mardi Gras Museum. This is a really cool place and I enjoyed getting to learn some of the history of a pretty famous party scene!

After the tour and small purchase I headed out on the 5 hour 45 minute drive from Mobile to Huntsville. It was an easy drive and I can tell I'm really getting into the pretty part of the US. So pretty!!

Tomorrow we're waking up early to hit one of Sarah and Calan's favorite breakfast spots then up to Tennessee to check out the JACK DANIELS distillery! I can't wait!!!! That is high up on my bucket list for sure!

Hope all is well! I'll give more of an update tomorrow!

Much love,
E

Day 4: Relaxed

Good evening peoples of the cyber world. Hope your evening is going well!

This trip was a wonderful idea, I really enjoyed my day doing whatever I wanted with no schedule. So relaxing!

Tonight I'm planning on staying in the hotel and watching tv. I've got Sarah and Calan's address already in my GPS and I plan on leaving tomorrow around noon. It's a little over 5 hours to drive to Huntsville from here, but I plan on stopping along the way for a picnic!

Here is the "Welcome to Alabama" sign I missed in my picture post earlier.

Thats what I have for tonight, hope all is well

Much love,
E

An amazing feeling

I hope everyone had a good 4th of July! Mine was one for the record books and I hope that I will remember it forever as one of the coolest things I've done.

Around 6 I went downstairs to the Hotel restaurant and had some of the best chicken wings I've ever had (I know right?) they were delicious! After that I came back up to the room, touched up some of my make up and went up to the "Skyview" lounge (hotel bar on the top floor of hotel) for drinks and the eventual fireworks show.

It wasn't very crowded but once again I found myself making friends with the bartenders and people around me. I got invited to sit with some of my new acquaintences and so I did. At 9 oclock the DJ put on all sorts of patriotic music and the lights dimmed as we watched the Fireworks begin on the USS Alabama. (Where I'm going today)

As I was watching the fireworks, I had a moment of  "Wow, I'm really doing this" it was both liberating and fufilling at the same time.

The even cooler part of the night was, the DJ was playing your basic "God Bless America" "You're a Grand ol' Flag" etc.... then he played the "Star Spangled Banner", now I know Alabama isn't some foreign country or anything like that... but I had the sense of nostalgia as a room full of strangers, from so many different locations sang in unison as we watched fireworks. No extra conversations, no drinks being ordered. Everything stopped and we sang along. It was very profound. Maybe there is hope for the human race after all!

After the fireworks finish, I mingle a bit more with the old folks (bar clears out mostly) and then aroundd 10:30 I head back to the room. It was a fun night, might have over indulged a bit in the cocktails last night, but alas no hangover this morning... So that is a win. Haha

Anywho, I'm off to grab some lunch and head out in the bustling metropolis of Mobile.

Much love,
E

Day 3- Mobile Alabama

Hello there everyone!

I made it to Mobile AL about 2:30 today after a unexpected detour through Gulfport MS. haha I should have used my GPS instead of going old school with the paper map.

Either way, I made a stop before getting to AL at a BBQ place called the Shed. It was a restaurant featured on my favorite Food Network show Diners Drive-ins and Dives. It was pretty tasty!

I'm staying at one of the more historic places I've ever stayed I think. But havent really found the history just yet. haha The area seems nice and old. :)

Tonight on the 4th there will be a fireworks watching by me in the hotel lounge. I'm looking forward to it. Not sure what I plan on doing for dinner. Might make me a sandwhich or go to the restaurant here. Depend$.

Anyways, I'll probably do an update later. Going to shower and watch tv in bed! (Because I can!) haha

Much love,
E

Next stop...Mobile

Things are winding down here in Lake Charles as I prepare to head out tomorrow morning to Mobile Alabama. I have to give a special salute to my best friend Shannon, I think i'll be able to wave to her alma-mater at some point on the 6th!

I can't wait to see different things tomorrow, new things. Or at least things I haven't seen in almost 20 years lol... drat I feel old.

Much Love,
E

Day 2- Simple

Today has been a simple day. I woke up, had a cup of LA coffee with some cherries (odd mix but delicious) and headed to the casinos.

I spent $20 at Isle of Capri and played for about an hour... so not horrible.

Then I drove over to Lau'Berge du Lac and spend about 2 hours on $25, so much better.

After I dropped my monies, I went and had an easy lunch at BWW over a beer and some boneless wings. YUM. It was nice.

Had a quick conversation with Granny J on the phone about my plans tomorrow and my next stop.

Here are some of my pictures I've taken so far. (from yesteraday)

-Driving by the Ford Arena in Beaumont

 -Welcome to LA sign

Crossing the Sabine River

Goodbye Texas!

Thats what I have so far. It's been fun, back at the house vedging now. Got the car gas'd up so I'm ready to go tomorrow morning!

Day 1- Theme Song

Hello everyone!

First off I'd like to make a shout out to my family and friends who have already hopped on the Emily travels too much bandwagon and are interested in enough to read on here. So thanks!

Today after a panicking morning of me "trying to keep to plans" I finally hit the road from Pearland just before 2. A tearful goodbye because of my dang darn nerves and that whenever I think about leaving the ones I love most I do get a little insecure. But this is way longer than a cruise lol.

While on the first of many miles that I will travel on I10 these next few days, I cranked up my iPod, compliments of my Fusion's SYNC system and began the ever fun task of listening to my eclectic selections of my ancient ipod.

Now don't judge me but every good traveler knows that there are songs you associate with each vacation. I found mine today as I was passing through Winnie TX. Please don't judge me either. I promise I'm not some 13 year old girl, but the song seemed fitting. So fitting, that I felt compelled to copy the lyrics here...

"Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield
I am unwritten, can't read my mind, I'm undefined
I'm just beginning, the pen's in my hand, ending unplanned

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Oh, oh, oh

I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines
We've been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can't live that way

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten

Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find

Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins

Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
The rest is still unwritten
Feel free to youtube it or download if you feel so obliged to... sorry, the music isnt that great, but the lyrics were fun.

So yes. I shall try my best to listen to this song at least once each day of this trip. Until something more profound comes along or I get annoyed. Which I think it'll be the annoyance that will get me first.

I arrived at my Aunt and Uncle's house around 4 oclock and we've enjoyed a fun evening just hanging around. Tomorrow I'm going to hit up a few casinos and check out a park I've been hearing about, then back here to have a cajun dinner prepared by my family. YUM!

That is all I have for right now. I might post some pictures tomorrow as I take them.

Much love and excitement!

Tomorrow is the day!

Just about all packed up and ready to go. I'm pretty nervous\excited. I like to compare it to Christmas Eve, minus no presents. Just a month of adventures. Which is a nice gift to myself I suppose! I have some errands to run in the morning for some last minute shopping and what not, then in the afternoon I'll head my way to Lake Charles for stop #1!

Just updated the wireless modem so I'll have internet the whole trip to do my updates and skype with loved ones and friends back home. If not I have my phone too that has skype capabilities too.

I look forward to sharing my adventures with ya'll on here!

Cheers!
